Starting therapy can feel like a big step, so I’ve outlined a few things to help you know what to expect.
Starting therapy takes courage—especially if you haven't been before, have had negative experiences, or are seeking support for your child. I want you to feel informed, comfortable, and in control of your journey from our very first point of contact.
-
Your initial appointment is all about slowing down, building safety, and understanding what brings you here.
Moving at Your Pace: There is never any pressure to share everything right away. I will meet you where you are and move at a pace that feels right for you.
Understanding Your Goals: Together, we will explore what has been happening, what you hope to gain from therapy, and how I can best support you.
Covering the Essentials: I will briefly run through confidentiality, session logistics, and answer any questions you have about how we will work together.
-
Therapy is hard work, and you shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable while doing it. Our consulting room is a low-pressure space designed for your comfort. Feel free to sit wherever you like, kick off your shoes, stretch out, bring a coffee or a snack, or move around during our session. Whatever helps you regulate, settle, and feel at ease is completely welcome here.

When working with children and young people, strong collaboration with parents and carers is essential for lasting change.
Initial Parent/Carer Consultation: I typically begin with a parent-only session so we can discuss your concerns openly, gather background history, and align on goals.
Working Together as a Team: You are the expert on your child. Therapy works best when we work as a team—meaning your involvement, insights, and engagement at home are just as important as the time your child spends in the consulting room with me.
Balancing Privacy & Connection: For children and adolescents to open up, they need to know their therapy room is a safe and confidential space. I balance this thoughtfully by keeping you updated on general themes, progress, and practical strategies while protecting your child's trust in the therapeutic space.
Regular Check-Ins: We will schedule regular catch-ups to share insights, review goals, and ensure strategies are working effectively at home and school.

Therapy is deeply personal. Research consistently shows that the single most important factor in positive outcomes isn't a specific technique—it is the quality and warmth of the relationship between you and your therapist.
I want you—or your child—to feel genuinely heard, understood, and comfortable.
It’s Okay if We Don’t "Gel": Every practitioner has a unique style, and I am not going to be the right match for every person who walks through my door. If at any point you feel that my approach isn't quite the right fit for you, please know that it is completely okay.
Support to Transition: There are never any hard feelings. If we decide together (or you feel) that another clinician or service would serve you better, I am always happy to support you with gentle referrals to other trusted colleagues.
Your care, comfort, and progress will always come first.
